Rien d’autre à faire qu’attendre…
“There are some weeks that really give you a slap across the face and remind you that Motocross and Supercross can be a brutally dangerous sport. Ernesto Fonseca’s crash, injury, surgery and hopes for recovery were on the minds of many riders and crew members in the pits last weekend. It’s particularly hard when people are looking for updates, and the word is that following the successful spinal surgery is that it’s now all about “wait and see.”
Kawasaki’s Roger Lee Hayden dedicated his 600cc Supersport win on Thursday at Daytona to Ernesto, and before the races on Saturday, Ernie’s mechanic, Jason Haines said, “I really want to thank him if I see him walking around. I was pumped, and I hope Ernie sees it on Tivo or on Speed Channel.” The hospital where Ernie’s staying was reportedly trying to get cable with Speed installed in time for the race on Friday night.
Meanwhile, Jason was already on his way to Daytona when Ernesto crashed, and handled being in Florida in the best way he knew how…by finishing his weekly prep on Ernie’s race bike.
Both class winners in the Daytona Supercross (Davi Millsaps and Ricky Carmichael) also mentioned Ernie in their podium appearances, and RC wore a pair of pants with a 4EF10 message to show his fallen friend that he was on his mind.”
3 semaines ont passé…

Tomorrow (Tues) will mark three weeks since his injury and he continues his recovery at the hospital in Riverside. He has been slow to regain full strength in his lungs, but his overall health has been good and the doctors continue to remind him that his road to recovery will be long (especially when Ernesto asks “when do I get to leave?”) and to look for results over time, and not day-to-day. The movement in his arms and hands continues to show improvement and all other progress with his legs will begin with rehabilitation, time and prayers …
“It¹s been over five weeks since Ernesto¹s terrible crash and I wanted to send along another note to update everyone on his condition. He was transported yesterday (Tues) to Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., where will begin an extensive rehabilitation program. Craig is considered one of the best spinal cord injury facilities in the world and has an experienced staff of doctors and therapists that will give Ernesto the support and drive to fight through the very tough road ahead.
He received excellent treatment at Riverside County Regional and made many, many friends. From neurosurgeons to nurses to therapists, Ernesto¹s upbeat personality, even through all of the tough times, was very contagious and he won over many in the intensive care unit. Those who visited Ernesto over the past few weeks can attest to this, especially when the ³two person limit² in the room was constantly expanded to accommodate the long list of family, friends and industry acquaintances who stopped in to visit.
Ernesto is still on a ventilator but his breathing has been getting stronger over the last few days and everyone (doctors included) fully expects his breathing to return to normal. He has good movement in his arms and wrists, with slight movement in his fingers that seem to be improving. He still has no feeling or movement from his chest down. However, through healing, hard work and prayer, he can regain that during his stay at Craig.
He continues to receive cards and letters from the thousands of fans who care so deeply for him. He enjoys having the cards read to him and finds inspiration from them. He personally asked me to thank everyone for their support and to let them know he is up for this fight and without them it would be tough to win.
I¹ll continue to keep you updated as he continues on this journey. Oh yeah, continue to send letters and cards and encourage others to do the same.
